Campbell & Company
Annual Report

Direct

The Assignment

While I’ve rarely heard “Hey let’s work on an investment firm annual report/recruiting brochure hybrid!” as a Vince Lombardi-level rallying cry, it was a richly satisfying experience to write this one. We got to feature people who loved their work and thrived in the culture in which they did that work. That culture is endlessly curious, even collegial in its continual give-and-take and frequent challenges to work outside of comfort zones.

A culture that is competitive and performance-driven, sure. Circumspect about proprietary information, of course. But one in which people get to have personalities and be quietly heroic in their individual way. Quite the opposite of a nameless/faceless company, and one well worthy of its own rallying cry.

THE PEOPLE WHO CREATE CAMPBELL

Dear clients, colleagues and shareholders,

2015 was a year of expansion—in how effectively we communicate and how creatively we arrive at solutions. We simply took the energy we devote to optimizing performance for our clients to another level. All it took was the right people to make it happen.

It’s the unsung heroes behind our quantitative modeling, the people behind the numbers, who exemplify our “we show up” philosophy. People with diverse backgrounds and perspectives who thrive in a culture of vigorous peer review, invaluable client feedback, free-flowing debate, continuous education and little fanfare.

Our strategies and solutions reflect and respect the individual challenges each of our clients face. Our portfolios temper volatility by bearing a low correlation to traditional stock and bond markets. Not every strategy should necessarily be price-driven, so in 2015, we continued to focus on non-trend strategies that focus on a company’s fundamental strengths.

Global diversification happens 24/7, so we commit to it, all day, every day. To continue to excel for our clients, we focused additional resources on our people and the spaces. And because risk comes in all forms, we’ve invested in our compliance efforts to give our clients comfort in the heavily regulated world in which they operate and reward them for their due diligence.

“Our investment in company and culture mirrors how effectively we meet the needs of our clients.”

JIMMY AND CAMPBELL

”INFORMATION SECURITY AFFECTS EVERYONE IN OUR COMPANY, AND I’M FREE TO RELATE TO PEOPLE IN EVERY DEPARTMENT.”

Jimmy has had an immense impact on Campbell since the day he arrived as a wise and experienced 16-year-old high school student. Was his internship spent sitting around, occasionally bugging folks that he was available to do stuff? Nope. It was spent quickly gaining the respect of his peers in implementing a successful mobile strategy. In short order, Jimmy was an integral part of the Campbell team.

Fast-forward 11 years and you’ll find that on any given day, Jimmy is responsible for devising in-depth defense mechanisms to protect intellectual property; optimizing Campbell’s trading systems; conducting vendor analyses; and holding highly informative and entertaining data center tours for advisors and clients.

“I’ve grown and learned here because I have the freedom to collaborate with as many people as possible. I love that about Campbell,” enthuses Jimmy.

Jimmy is passionate about everything he does. His capacity to assimilate endlessly shifting requirements, and implement best practices in an ever-changing landscape of security threats, is nothing short of heroic. It has to be to keep Campbell at the leading edge of data security, compliance and technology.

Jimmy doesn’t have much spare time, but when he gets some he likes to: Teach Computer and Information Science classes at Towson University, promote architecture education as a Director at the Baltimore Architecture Foundation (BAF), travel the world with family and friends, study voice at The Peabody Institute and exercise his pipes at Eastern Orthodox liturgical services.
